When it comes to make-up, I believe most people have a preference for certain product categories. Some like to play around with blushes, others are all over lipstick, the perfect teint or their eyebrows. I belong to the teint / lipstick fraction and have avoided eye shadows for several years since I have hooded eyes and eye shadow tends to move into my eyelid crease in no time. I’m happy to announce that these times are gone…
There are two products that contributed to my eye shadow revelation: one is the fantastic eye shadow base by Sante (this one) and the other are the ECOCERT certified ZAO eye shadows. ZAO carries three eye shadow lines: one is the pearly eye shadow range, then there are the matt eye shadows and a range of creamy eye shadows. I will swatch and review three shades of the pearly eye shadow range and one of the matt eye shadows.
Since I am quite pale with a cold / pink skintone and blue eyes, I knew which colours would probably suit me (brown, green, pink, purple…) and which would not (blue as well as anything too orange, gold or yellow since they clash with the undertone of my skin). While browsing through the different shades, I noticed that every shade is available as a refill version as well. I did not hesitate and ordered four shades together with the ZAO bamboo palette pictured above.
Shade #108 “Pearly Grey Green” (Pearly Eye Shadow Range)
This wears its name with pride: it’s a shimmery green with a stone grey undertone. I like to apply it on the whole lid, it can be built up from a hint of colour to almost full coverage and is thus perfect for a day or evening make-up.
Shade #107 “Pearly Brown Grey” (Pearly Eye Shadow Range)
I was not sure about this shade. I know that brown eye shadow suits me but at the same time, I often find it boring (come on, it’s brown). #107 looks quite grey in the picture above, the actual colour is closer to how it looks on the swatch picture below. I say it is an ideal mix of grey, brown and mauve that is perfect for being applied to the socket line or as an eyeliner with a wet eyeliner brush.
Shade #204 “Golden Old Pink” (Matt Eye Shadow Range)
#204 may look subtle in the picture below but it is actually quite intense. I use the rosé colour for the whole lid, it makes my eyes look more open and awake. The golden shimmer particles are visible but not overly so.
Shade #111 “Peach Blossom”(Pearly Eye Shadow Range)
This is definitely the most adventurous shade of the four that I bought. “Peach Blossom” is a peachy pink shade that goes well with “Golden Old Pink”. It makes the blue of my eyes pop out, however, I like to combine it with an eyeliner so that I don’t look like after a night of crying 😛
Would I buy them again? Hell, yes! I am even intrigued to buy more shades (#109 Pearly Turquoise and #115 Ruby Red look gorgeous!). The 3g refill tins are 8,90 EUR each (I bought them at Najoba Onlinestore) and so far, are well worth the bucks. The bamboo beauty palette costs 18,60 EUR and is big enough for four eye shadows or for two teint products (e.g. ZAO blushes). It keeps the magnetic tins where they are, the mirror is handy and the four magnets at the rim of the box make sure that the lid does not open when the box is carried or when it is lying upside down.
